DIY DOG DE-SKUNKER

If your dog has ever had the “honor” of meeting one of Pepe Le Pew’s many relatives, you know firsthand just how putrid the smell that comes out of the back end of a skunk can be.

Some people compare it to the smell of marijuana but to those people I say, “YOU ARE HIGHLY MISTAKEN MY FRIEND!” I’m not talking about driving by some roadkill on the highway, no no no, that’s spread out in a wide area outside, the wind has probably carried some of it away, then it comes through the filters of your car and hits your nose at about 15% intensity. It’s weak.

I’m talking up close, full blast, right in the eye of the storm cloud skunk smell. One of the worst things to ever pass my nostrils.

Think about what it’s like to watch a video filmed in 4K; the brightness of the colors & how accurate they are to real life, the insanely high quality of the people on screen (to the point where you can see their pores), it makes you feel like you’re in the video, it’s surreal. Well, smelling skunk up close and personal is like smelling in 4K, except unlike the delightful out of body experience you get from a high-definition video, this smell gives you full body shudders. Your eyes start to water instantly, a lump starts to form in the back of your throat that quickly expels in the form of a wheeze & turns into a rollercoaster of simultaneous coughing/gagging. You’ll find yourself on the brink of vomiting multiple times in a span of just 30 seconds.

I really can’t even describe something that may smell similar, it’s in its own category of terrible and can only be described as unholy.

In 2021 I had the unfortunate pleasure of 3 separate skunk encounters with my own dogs…but as most dog owners know, I really could only blame myself. I gave my dogs a wee bit too much freedom on our nightly walk & before I even realized what was happening, they came running out of the trees sliding across the grass trying to get the smell off themselves. Although they were the ones that were physically affected by these events, I would say I was the one who suffered the most.

To spare you the pain & suffering that I went through I’ll share with you how I was able to get this terrible smell off my dogs quickly – like I said this happened 3 times to me this year so you could basically call me an expert in skunk smell removal.

The super secret Krabby Patty formula to remove this smell is a combination of:

Nothing fancy, nothing expensive. You probably have all 3 of these ingredients in your home already, if not I suggest adding them to your next shopping list and keeping them with your first aid kit so if/when this emergency strikes you’re prepared for battle (and no calling it an emergency is not being dramatic, when you smell it for the first time you’ll understand and you’ll want to handle the situation as fast as humanly possible) Now, there are skunk odor remover products on the market, I’ve never tried these so I don’t know if they do work or if they are worth recommending, but honestly I wouldn’t take a chance on them anyway because if they don’t work then you’ll have to suffer through this smell for even longer – and I don’t think I could sleep at night knowing your nose & lungs were being polluted with skunk smell for longer than necessary. And don’t waste your time with tomato juice, that definitely does not work.

When I originally found the recipe for this concoction the recommended ratio was:

        1. ¼ cup of baking soda.
        2. 1-2 teaspoons of Dawn.
        3. 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution.

I mixed that ratio together in a bucket and the first thing I thought was “Oh this won’t do anything” so I decided to be a chemist in that moment and create my own recipe. I’ll be honest I don’t remember the ratio I used, and it probably wasn’t even the exact same ratio for each of the 3 incidents. Essentially what I did was mix make a paste with the ingredients, which made it very easy for me to scoop a handful out of the bucket and have control of it as I smeared it across my dog’s chest and scrubbed the dickens out of the entire area. Their chest got full blast of the spray, but unfortunately some of it got onto their faces as well, so prepare yourself for that. However, the paste like formula also makes it easier to scrub the small areas on the face and avoid the eyes.

Scrub for a few minutes (or as long as you can really,) rinse, then wash again with regular dog shampoo. Since I didn’t use as much peroxide as the original recipe I found I didn’t see any sort of bleaching effect on my dog’s fur, but keep that in mind if you do use more peroxide, or if you have a dog with black fur.

Full transparency here, I’m not saying this completely eliminates the skunk smell with just one wash, but it WILL allow you to get within inches of your dog without coughing or gagging anymore. Repeat the process with 2-3 washes & you will finally be rid of the skunk smell. Unfortunately, you’ll have to discard any mixture that is left over, I read somewhere that it will explode if you store it in a closed container. Yikes!

On top of the baths, I would recommend keeping your dog outside or in the garage, if possible, let them air out as much as you can. If you don’t have the option to do either of those, at the very least keep them in a kennel in your home, this will prevent them from rubbing on the carpet, your clothes or your furniture – trust me you don’t want this smell in your home, it’s much harder to get rid of!
